Walk By Faith, Not By Sight
By David J. Stewart
2nd Corinthians 5:7, “(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)”
In the Old Testament, Lot was Abraham's biological nephew. As their herds and families grew, things became crowded. The Bible teaches that Lot approached Abraham and asked to divide their flocks. Abraham was a humble man and gave Lot the choice to choose which area of Jordan he wanted. Lot chose the well-watered plains toward Sodom.
Lot walked by sight and he only got a part of Jordan. Lot went where it looked like it was best, walking by sight. Abraham knew that God would provide for him. Abraham said, “Take your choice Lot.” Because of that act of faith—knowing that God would take care of him—God gave Abraham all the land. Abraham knew that God would take care of him. Abraham trusted that God would take care of him. What an important truth for every believer to learn and live by!!! How many Christians walk by sight, choosing what looks good, but in reality it is the temptation of the world that ends up ruining their life? In reality they are trying to fulfill the lusts of the flesh, the lusts of the eyes and the pride of life.
Most secular counselors these days have a wicked attitude. They say, “Well, it's alright, just do what you want to do, after all you only live one life. Have your fun! Have your sex! Have your drugs!” They end up getting syphilis, their brains fried on drugs and their life shattered in pieces. Sin always robs a person of everything. Sin requires A-double-L... ALL!!!
Genesis 13:9-11, “Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left. And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.”
The Bible says that the men of Sodom were wicked...
Genesis 13:13, “But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.”
When Lot left Sodom with his wife and daughters, they had alcohol with them. Lot's wife disobeyed the Lord and turned back to view the destruction of Sodom, turning into a pillar of salt. Lot's daughters got their father drunk and commit sexual immorality with him. Without the booze those sins wouldn't have happened. Alcohol is a door to sin. They didn't find alcohol in the cave. They didn't have a wet-bar in the cave. That liquor came out of Sodom! Booze is synonymous with sin!!! Beer and wine are Trojan Horse sins, opening the door for fornication, adultery, violence, drunk driving, homosexuality, nudity, profanity, bestiality and every manner of wickedness.
Lot walked by SIGHT, choosing what appeared to be best; but in the end Lot's family was destroyed and Abraham was given everything...
Genesis 13:14-17, “And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.”
What a precious truth!!! When we walk by faith, God blesses us. Walking by sight is the world's way. Hebrews 11:6 doesn't say that it's hard to please God without faith; but rather, it is IMPOSSIBLE to please God without faith.
“To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man...” —Colossians 1:27-28
